Solo handyman vs small crew
Just you
If you book most jobs by phone and mainly need to send a quote and get paid, an estimating and invoicing app like Joist may be enough. Its scheduling features sit on the Run plan. If you want customers to book online and a calendar that fills itself, compare Jobber Core, QuoteIQ Essentials and Housecall Pro Basic.
2–5 people
Now you need to assign jobs, see who’s where and track time. Jobber Connect lists 5 users, routing, GPS and time tracking. Housecall Pro Essentials lists 5 users and employee GPS. Workiz lists team location tracking and subcontractor management on every plan, but you’ll need to ask for a price.
Who each tool fits, and when to skip it
J Jobber
Fits: handymen who want online booking, quotes, invoices and a client hub on the entry plan, with progress invoicing for bigger jobs.
Maybe skip if: you want job costing or markups without paying for Grow ($149/mo billed annually for 1 user).
H Housecall Pro
Fits: handyman businesses that want a price book, job costing and customer financing from the first plan.
Maybe skip if: you’re part-time and price-sensitive. Basic is $59/mo billed annually, about twice Jobber Core’s listed price.
Q QuoteIQ
Fits: handymen who send option or package quotes with materials, and want photos and e-signatures (from Beginner).
Maybe skip if: you need QuickBooks on a budget (from Pro, $199.99/mo) or won’t enter a card for the trial.
W Workiz
Fits: handyman companies that use subcontractors and want QuickBooks, online booking and financing on every plan.
Maybe skip if: you want to see a price before a sales conversation. All three plans say “Request pricing.”
J Joist
Fits: solo handymen who mainly need fast estimates, invoices and payments at a low monthly price.
Maybe skip if: you need scheduling on a low plan (it’s on Run) or run a crew. We didn’t see team pricing on its pricing page.
Paying a crew? Payroll is usually separate.
Job apps track hours, but payroll and payroll taxes are normally handled by a payroll service. Gusto lists its Simple plan at $49/mo + $6/mo per person, as checked Oct 10, 2026 (source).
How we choose
How we choose. Our picks are based on each vendor’s public pricing page: listed prices, the features named for each plan, and plan limits such as included users. We haven’t run these products ourselves, so we describe features as “listed,” not tested, and we say when a price isn’t published. We rank by fit for your trade and team size, not by payout.
